Materials:

Worsted Weight Yarn
Crochet Hook Size H
Tapestry needle
Instructions (shell st version):

Ch 3. Join with a sl st to form ring.
Row 1: Ch 1 (counts as first sc); Work 5 sc in ring, join with a sl st to 1st ch 1. (6 sc)

Row 2: Ch 3 for first dc, work 2 dc in same sc as sl st, ch 1, * 3 dc in next sc for a shell, ch 1, repeat from * around, sl st in 3rd st of the ch-3. (6 shells around)

Row 3: Sl st in next 2 dc, sl st in next ch-1 space, ch 3 for first dc of first shell, in same space work 1 dc, ch 1 and 3 dc, ch 1, * in next ch-1 space work 2 dc, ch 1 and 3 dc, ch 1, repeat from * 4 more times, join with a sl st in 3rd st of the ch 3. (6 double shells around)

Row 4: Sl st in next dc, sl st in next ch-1 space, ch 3 for first dc, in same space work 1 dc, ch 1 and 2 dc, ch 1, * work a 3 dc shell in next space, ch 1, in next ch 1 space work 2 dc, ch 1, and 2 dc, ch 1, repeat from * 4 more times, 3 dc in next (last) space, ch 1, join with a sl st in top of ch 3.

Row 5: Sl st in next dc, sl st in next space, ch 3 for first dc, in same space work 1 dc, ch 1, * in next space work 3 dc, ch 1, in next space work 2 dc, ch 1, repeat around to last space, work 3 dc in next (last) space, join with sl st to top of ch-3.

Rows 6-16: Sl st in next dc, sl st in next space, ch 3 for first dc, in same space work 2 dc, ch 1, * in next space work 3 dc, ch 1, repeat around to last space, work 3 dc in next (last) space, join with sl st to top of ch-3. After completing row 16, fasten off yarn.

To complete hat: With same yarn, thread tapestry needle and sew short stitches from about 4" from bottom edge of cap (Row 8 or 9) down to edge of cap and then back up again. On inside of cap, tighten yarn to make gathers and then tie off.

(hdc = half double crochet)

Ch 3. Join with a sl st to form ring.

Row 1: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), work 9 hdc in ring. Join with a sl st to top ch of 1st ch 2. (10 hdc)

Row 2: Ch 2 for first hdc. Starting in same st, work 1 more hdc, then work 2 hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st to top ch of 1st ch 2. (20 hdc)

Row 3: Ch 2 for first hdc. Starting in same st, work 1 more hdc, then * work 1 hdc, then 2 hdc in each st around, ending with 1 hdc in last st. Join with a sl st to top ch of 1st ch 2. (30 hdc)

Row 4: Ch 2 for first hdc. Starting in same st, work 1 more hdc, then * work 1 hdc 2 times, then 2 hdc in each st around, ending with 1 hdc in last 2 sts. Join with a sl st to top ch of 1st ch 2. (40 hdc)

Row 5: Ch 2 for first hdc. Starting in same st, work 1 more hdc, then * work 1 hdc 3 times, then 2 hdc in each st around, ending with 1 hdc in last 3 sts. Join with a sl st to top ch of 1st ch 2. (50 hdc)

Row 6: Ch 2 for first hdc. Starting in same st, work 1 more hdc, then * work 1 hdc 4 times, then 2 hdc in each st around, ending with 1 hdc in last 4 sts. Join with a sl st to top ch of 1st ch 2. (60 hdc)

Row 7: Ch 2 for first hdc. Starting in same st, work 1 more hdc, then * work 1 hdc 5 times, then 2 hdc in each st around, ending with 1 hdc in last 5 sts. Join with a sl st to top ch of 1st ch 2. (70 hdc)

Rows 8-20: Ch 2 for first hdc. Work 1 hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st to top ch of 1st ch 2. After completing row 20, fasten off yarn. Cap should measure 7 1/2" from crown to bottom edge. If your cap measures longer, remove final row(s) in order for cap to measure correctly. If your cap measures shorter, add another row(s) to obtain that measurement.

To complete hat: With same yarn, thread tapestry needle and sew short stitches from about 4" from bottom edge of cap (Row 9 or 10) down to edge of cap and then back up again. On inside of cap, tighten yarn to make gathers and then tie off.
